CHARLIE
Adapted from Flowers for Algernon
The Aftermath, Central, Hong Kong
2022 - 2024
The play was adopted from the novel Flowers for Algernon
by Daniel Keyes. Attila Gonczy first premiered this role 12 years ago in Budapest, telling the story of Charlie and Algernon.
In the novel and play, Charlie is a young man with an intellectual disability. He volunteers to undergo an experimental surgery to increase his intelligence. The surgery involves implanting brain tissue from a laboratory mouse named Algernon that underwent the same procedure successfully.
Reviews have praised Attila Gonczy's physically demanding performance for the way he captures
Charlie's wildly unstable emotional journey as his intelligence skyrockets after the surgery, only to later deteriorate again. Audiences have been captivated as Attila Gonczy portrays Charlie's struggles to adapt to his new mind, isolation amid prejudice, and relationship with Mrs. Kinnian that is strained by their intellectual differences.
